Weekly Characters#2288

M

We are in the drought of Flicker Updates, I’m unsure if the team is working on bringing us another big update (Likely not), but to at least keep the game relevant, I think weekly character additions would be nice.

Maybe for a years worth of time, the developers could add in one new Flicker character every week (Except for Week 1, where we could get the long awaited Alec, Jane & Adora revamps), I don’t think it would be that hard to code a new character into the game every week.

Doing this for a year would mean 54 new additions to the roster, many agree the game desperately needs new characters, so weekly characters would help keep the community satisfied while a big update may be worked on

I don’t think Flicker desperately needs new characters. New characters are nice and everything but flicker is not centered about them.

On another note, I don’t think it’s as easy and fast as you think, doing it every week would mean that you probably put random hair, face and clothes and called it “character” and no one wants a character like that c’mon.

@mbknight777 They are.
@Nani There have been plans for an entire new cast of characters. This has been announced multiple times. A large portion of this game is central to the characters. Jo even mentioned a sort of weekly roll-out, but not in game. https://discord.com/channels/399699753874751499/959837990077734942/1250298404572102757

^ The main part of Flicker is the actual gameplay, not its characters (Though I admit that most of the fandom cares about characters, but it still doesn’t mean characters are the center).
If they’re planned beforehand then it’s another case, but I doubt new characters can be created every week (and by “new” I mean characters that were completed the same week they were first thought of)

With due respect, not really. It’s a round-based party game. It will get boring if it’s played repeatedly. Flicker’s longevity was always purported by the community and characters. That’s the reason lore projects were drafted, etc.

And yes, they’re definitely not planned on the spot. Jo has been spending time with them, something she’s said before in public. https://discord.com/channels/399699753874751499/959837990077734942/1174101156113416192

I understand that it would be boring without characters, and that characters are a big part of the community, but it doesn’t change the fact that Flicker is a social deduction game. It’s not just social hangout, but there’s the “murder mystery” you need to solve until the round ends.
It’s still playable without characters, but without the gameplay the characters would be.. just random characters out there, with no “attachment” to them. I mean, what is a game with only characters? What is Flicker without the roles and abilities that help figure out roles and rounds and etc?

The community has always been the central focus for JJ Studios. Characters are the primary route for connecting with them.

This isn’t to say that I don’t like the game. I’ve played Flicker on and off for four years as of this Halloween. It’s not a “hangout,” and I didn’t say it was. But Flicker is a video game. Video games are superficial entertainment. The messaging behind the characters, and for the community, is generally much more profound than any gameplay element.

Custom exists without characters and yields more players.

Custom is where you make a character?

Sure the characters are a big part of the community and why they still play the game, a friend of mine said exactly that yesterday. They are also a way for the Devs to connect their players to the game by providing characters with different ethic backgrounds, sexualities, and genders.
The issue is, however profound these characters are, the game is still a social deduction one built off of gameplay. Characters have never been an issue when it comes to loosing players it’s always been the gameplay and it’s dormant state of being, gaining minor updates every 6 months that do nothing.
It’s nice that we are getting characters and all this other non gameplay focused stuff. I respect Jo and all the work they have put forward. Since I know this part of the game is their main focus. She has been really open with what she is doing. Wheather that be her new lobby, character, or all the new hairs in the custom shop.
We have two devs for a reason, it’s just only one has shown us progress, and that’s Jo, without any progress from Jojo the main focus of complaint and a majority of player loss is attributed to the lack of and major gameplay content updates.
Without any knowledge of the future from Jojo a majority of player will quit and attribute lack of updates to the reason they had left. This will also lead to the point the devs should focus more on content rather than character. Not knowing both devs work on complete opposite parts of the game.
